Ethnographic

The idea that cutting edge art is a new phenomenon is a widespread belief, but experimental art would not be possible without the rich reserves of the past. The Demoiselles d'Avignon, to take but one example, owes much to Picasso's 1907 visit to the Musée d'Ethnographie du Trocadéro and the African masks he saw there. In our current sharing, we also reach into our gallery’s ethnographic collection to present a special curated selection. While the creators’ names are now unknown, their works would have been an inspiration and "contemporary" to their own circle. They continue to reverberate in ours.
