Tutsi Basket

$1,000.00

A finely woven Tutsi basket, with conical lid.

In Rwanda, grasses and fibrous plants are abundant across the volcanic mountainous landscape. Woven basketry containers and architectural elements have made extensive use of this resource, weaving the region’s most widespread form of traditional artistic expression. Granaries, homes, clothing, agriculture and fishing nets all benefit from these ancestral skills.

The present basket, with its robust construction and conical top, is a fine example of traditional weaving and design, surviving the country’s horrific 1994 genocide to tell a story of a more peaceful time.

Early to mid 20th century. Fine surface patina and condition.

Ex Gina Hellweger, Germany.

H 47 cm; Bottom part 34 cm; Lid 25 cm
