African Yoruba Prestige Torque

An African Yoruba Prestige Torque. A heavy bronze master stroke of metal work with high copper content, showing a series of ridges, culminating in two disc like protrusions, with nipple terminals at each end.

This would have been a valuable prestige piece in the Yoruba culture, used as currency, display of wealth, and important exchanges including dowry gift. For more information on African metalwork see “Striking Iron: The Art of African Blacksmith,” Fowler Museum at UCLA, 2019.

Circa 17th-19th century.
